Octavius’s Object

This object is an oriental style bowl. The exact origin of this object is not known, however through analysing the traditional clothing that is clearly shown in the centre of the bowl it is suspected to be Chinese. This bowl is a clear representation of skilled craftsmanship, due to the fact that the bowl was clearly made by hand on a Potter’s wheel, and all of the decoration being applied by hand.

Unfortunately, at some point the bowl has lost a substantial amount of original material – this was most likely due to impact damage; however, the object has been given to the University of Lincoln’s Conservation department for treatment by Belvoir Castle.

The treatment of this object has proven particularly difficult due to the amount of material lost. Although the treatment was not completed on this object, one is able to grasp the scale of the size of the bowl from the fill that has been applied.

All that remains for the object to be completed is fine honing of the plaster fill, and to apply the missing decorative paint work.
